Tackling Mental Health
Issues around mental health is something that is thankfully becoming more and more open within the public domain as sports, in particular Rugby League, take the lead in raising awareness. Raising awareness of issues around mental health and continuing to remove any associated stigmas has been a major goal of rugby league as a
SRD Foundation is committed to playing its part and has received funding through Salford CVS to deliver a one year Tackle Mental Health awareness programme.
The aim of Tackle Mental Health is to address the stigma around mental health issues of those residing in the City of Salford targeting young people aged 14 to 24 years and males aged 30+.
SRDF will incorporate a State of Mind element to existing activities including NEET Apprenticeship (16-19 year olds), ‘Back to Work’ programme (18+ year olds), college/ university programme, community club systems and SRD player pathways.
SRDF will work in partnership with local organisations such as NHS Salford and local mental health charity Start in Salford to deliver a comprehensive awareness campaign that targets local sports clubs, businesses and community groups and have great plans for 2015.
Start in Salford is a community arts and wellbeing charity at the heart of Salford.
Their vision is to create a centre of excellence that enables individuals to develop their aspirations, confidence, self-esteem and skills, using the arts, horticulture and other creative mediums renowned for their therapeutic benefits.
There are five simple steps we can all take to improve our wellbeing. They are:
Connect... Talk and listen to the people around you. With family, friends, colleagues and neighbours.
Be active... Indoors or outdoors. Alone or with others. Go for a walk. Play a game. Garden. Dance. Exercising makes you feel good.
Take notice... Be curious. Notice the unusual or beautiful things in every day. Take time to think about what really matters to you.
Keep learning... Try something new. Rediscover an old interest. Join a group or take a course. Learning new things will help make you more confident as well as being fun.
Give... Do something nice for a friend, or a stranger. Something as small as a smile can be a huge gift. Offer your help as a volunteer or friend, and feel part of the community.
SRDF now incorporates a mental health awareness message in its education programmes such as our ‘back to work’ offer and NVQ apprenticeships. The Tackle Mental Health initiative will not only raise awareness of such issues, but crucially look to ensure anybody who needs help gets it very quickly. Throughout 2012 - 2014 we held a series of events including an Awareness Day at a 2014 Super League home match as this important message needs to be delivered.
