“Dune’s Day” For Learners of RL Academy at Salford City College

Salford City College  coaches took an unconventional root to gain a competitive advantage in preparing their Rugby League Academy for their season’s biggest test so far. With strong opposition in Hopwood Hall College in the Champion College Quarter Final fast approaching, coaches led by Neil Hayden took their charges on a day of fitness based training on the sand dunes of Lytham, St Annes.

While the Learners were put through their paces, it is hoped that the benefits of this unconventional training method may prove to give the Learners an important advantage in this take all cup clash.

This fitness technique was first pioneered by Percy Cerutti in the 1960’s, bringing practitioners a scope of potential benefits.  Such benefits include; improving running technique and teaching an aggressive arm and shoulder action. There are further benefits in relation to neuromuscular systems, as well as increasing stride length and frequency, with evidence of positive metabolic benefits, improving anaerobic lactate threshold, as well as aiding mental preparation.

However, judging by the accompanying images, there is little gain without pain here.

The Quarter Final match will be played at Folly Lane on 27th February, with kick off at 2pm. Salford City College are hopeful that home advantage may prove decisive whoever the opposition, and all are welcome to come and support the team.

Continued progression for Salford City College Rugby League Academy is reflective of the benefits from their partnership with Salford City Reds Foundation. This partnership sees students benefiting from the expertise of the Reds first team staff on a regular basis. The Rugby Academy trains and plays three times a week with each student given an individual strength and conditioning programme.

Head coach Neil Hayden outlined, “Previous months training sessions are really starting to pay dividend for the team, which can be seen in the come back against Winstanley”. “The benefits of training and playing are obvious, but the opportunity to learn from professional players and coaches will hopefully fire up the team and give them an advantage when the big matches come around.”

Let’s certainly hope so.
