Health Officer Danny Doherty Update

It’s a busy time of the year here at the Foundation for Health Officer Danny Doherty. With Stoptober in full swing, and with an eye on next month’s ‘Movember’, it seems that every day brings a new engagement in the ongoing challenge of promoting healthy lifestyle choices to the Salford community.

Taking an opportunity to catch up with Danny on a rare return to the office, Danny was keen to discuss the work he has been doing with Salford Council and NHS on the Health Improvement Bus, as well as his time spent this week in the Stoptober Pop-Up Shop in Salford Shopping Centre.

With the Health Improvement Bus roving around Salford and Eccles last week, the local community had the opportunity to pop down to discuss their health and relevant health issues, as well as have a general health check. Danny rode the Health Bus for the week, with other health professionals representing Salford City Council, using the bus as a platform to promote health and healthy lifestyles to the people of Salford.

Danny said, “We all could perhaps live a little healthier, so having the chance to come out with the Health bus and speak to people directly to promote healthy lifestyles was something I was very keen to do.

“Speaking to people from all walks of life, and highlighting the benefits of healthy lifestyle decisions will hopefully be a benefit to the community, while complimenting the other great work going on here on the Health bus”.

As well as Danny’s time navigating the community on the Health Bus, Danny also spent some time this week at the Stoptober Pop-Up Shop in Salford Shopping Centre, actively promoting he benefits of quitting tobacco while highlighting the available support on offer.

Danny stressed, “The dangers of smoking are no secret to anyone anymore, and engaging with community members to see the positives quitting tobacco can bring can only be a good thing. I would encourage all those who smoke to recognise the positive financial, physical and lifestyle changes quitting smoking can bring, as well as the quality it can add to family life.

“We have a range of health initiatives here at the Foundation concerning health, ranging from healthy eating and exercise plans, right through to support to quit smoking and cut down alcohol. I would encourage anyone with concerns in these areas to contact me at the Foundation directly”.
