Varsity Rugby League is back

Varsity clash back for 2013

The annual “Two Cities Challenge” Varsity battle between the University of Salford RL Club and the University of Manchester RL club will be held at the Salford City Stadium on 29th April 2013. This year’s clash is sponsored by Johnsons Motors who have come on board as a partner of Salford City Reds Foundation for 2013. Speaking for the Johnsons Motors Paul Bradshaw added “Im always looking to put something back into community sport and when this opportunity came up to support the local rugby scene we were more than happy to get involved”

The centerpiece rugby match, witnessed by over 1000 plus spectators last year and considered one of the biggest student academic sports events in the North West will kick off in the 5th Varsity RL match between the two universities and the second to be held at the Salford City Stadium, home of the famous Salford City Reds.

The “Two Cities Challenge” Varsity match is in its 5th year, and has gone from strength to strength following its move to the Salford City Stadium in 2012. Currently winning the series 3-1 Salford are looking to extend this lead. However, given the form of the Manchester University team this year, the Manchester team will be confident of a victory. In any event, organisers, participants and supporters alike eagerly await a renewal of rivalries and a match that lives long in the memory.

As excitement builds, Ed Farish, CEO of the Salford City Reds was enthusiastic about the forthcoming clash when saying “its great to see the return of this Varsity match to the home of Salford City Reds and we welcome all connected to each University. Rugby League has seen a meteoric rise in popularity at Universities over the past 10 years and we like to think we have played our part by hosting such a match between these passionate, longstanding rivals”

Tickets are priced at £5 each for the match and can be purchased from each University’s respective rugby league clubs or at the stadium on the day.
