Year 7 Talent Identification

Year 7 Talent Identification

The Salford Red Devils Foundation held its first Talent Identification tournament at the AJ Bell Stadium on Wednesday 2nd July to source local talented Year 7 rugby players in the area.

Our Development Manager Danny Barton, who is keen to discover talent in the community, pilots talent Identification. “Being a Salford lad, I remember what it was like to represent your city and how great that felt. We aim to recreate this feeling and hope to unearth talent at a younger age and give the kids a chance to showcase their ability.”

The aim of the event is to identify gifted players in order to create pathways for further development, potentially leading to scholarships with Salford Red Devils.

The day consisted of an Origin-type tournament to select representative teams from the local area, specifically Salford, Trafford and Manchester.

The schools in attendance were Blessed Thomas Holford, Sale Grammar, Buille Hill, Moorside High, Irlam High, Wright Robinson, St. Peter’s RC High, Newall Green High, Albion High, Walkden High, Oasis Academy and East Manchester Academy.

There were a total of 14 teams – with some schools bringing more than one team – each with a total of 10 players.

Squads of 25 children are then selected to play in a Tri-Series tournament against each other.

The Foundation will be going out and watching further Under 12’s matches in Salford, Manchester and Trafford to assess more children who were not available to attend the tournament.

Our Talent Identification day was a major success and we are hoping to develop and replicate this in the future.
